SSI is Supplemental Security Income for low-income individuals. It is administered by
the Social Security Administration.
Some assisted living facilities will accept SSI as whole or partial payment for their
services. Assisted living facilities in California cannot accept Medi-Cal (the state
implementation of the federal Medicaid program) for their services.
When an individual moves into an assisted living facility in California, their SSI payment
is often increased.
The SSI rate in California for assisted living care is generally $771/mo plus $101/mo for
incidental expenses. This was effective Jan 1, 2001.
Please contact your local Social Security office if you have questions about SSI benefits
for assisted living care in California.
